Introduction: HIV infection is a global pandemic. In the absence of any cure or preventive vaccine, appropriate condom use has a pivotal role in the effort to prevent its transmission and spread.The study aimed to determine the pattern of condom use among People Living with HIV (PLHIV). Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among 400 PLHIV receiving medical care in a health facility. A two stage sampling method was used to select study respondents from the sample frame. An interviewer administered closedended questionnaire was used to collectdata from the respondents.An ethical approval was granted for the conduct of the study and individual informed consent was obtained from the respondents before the questionnaire was administered. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 34.5±0.4 years. Fifty seven percent of the respondentswere sexually active within the past six months. Among the sexually active, 68.7%reported consistent use of condom while 31.3%were inconsistent/non-user. Ethnicity,religion and educational level were respondents socio-demographic characteristics found to be associated with condom use as well asrespondents' and their partners' desire for children. Respondents' desire for children was the key factor influencing condom use among the respondents. Conclusion: Many PLHIV, are sexually active of which significant proportion were inconsistent with condom use. This group can equally benefit from services that prevent vertical transmission of the infection as well as achieving the reproductive health desires. |
