| Background: The management of waste is another element in the protection of public health. Failure to manage and dispose waste properly exposes people to increase risk of infectious diseases. Objectives: To determine the knowledge of hazards, attitude, and practices of improper refuse disposal, and willingness to pay for sanitation services for house hold domestic refuse disposal at Bafarawa housing estate in Sokoto Metropolis, Northwest Nigeria. Methods: It was a descriptive cross-sectional study involving 281 residents of Bafarawa estate in Sokoto State, Northwest, Nigeria. Participants were selected randomly from 500 houses within the estate. -interviewer administered questionnaire containing questions on demographic profile, knowledge of hazards, attitude, and practices of improper refuse disposal including willingness to pay for a sanitation services; and also house hold domestic refuse disposal practice observer check list were also included. Data were collected and analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results: A total of 281 participants were interviewed. Those that have knowledge of hazards of poor refuse disposal were 93.2%, 82.2% have knowledge of diseases that can be caused by poor refuse disposal, open dumping was being practiced by 82.2% and 92.5% have refuse bin in their compound. Those that have willingness to participate in community refusal disposal were 80.1% and willingness to pay someone for refuse disposal was 86.8%. Only 8.5% were willing to pay N1, 000 (One Thousand Naira) monthly for refuse disposal. Those that have dust bin in the kitchen were 70.5%, 92.5% had refuse bin in the compound and 78.1% had refuse burning outside the compound. Conclusion: Knowledge of hazard of improper refuse disposal was good among the residents, open refuse disposal was the commonest dumping method practiced, and majority of the residents expressed their wish to participate in community refusal disposal. |
