Background: The field of modern medicine has witnessed tremendous growth and diversification since the 18 century. Laboratory medicine (pathology) is one of the founding sub-specialties. However, the roles and functions of pathologists is poorly understood in contemporary time even among some physicians' colleagues. Methodology: Literature search was conducted using the relevant keywords from recognized data bases of AJOL, Google Scholar and PUBMED amongst others. Results: This paper elaborates an abridged history of medicine as it affects pathology then reviewed the practice of pathology in Nigeria versus the laws establishing the practice. Subsequently, the workflow in clinical laboratories was considered and this was wrapped off with the functions of pathologists. Conclusions: The role of pathologist in the modern era of medicine cannot be overemphasized. It is hoped that this review paper may open windows for further specialization in this branch of medicine.
