Background: Asthma is one of the respiratory diseases with an increasing trend in Africa. The aim of asthma treatment is control of asthma symptoms and the prevention of risk of exacerbations. Asthma management is still suboptimal in Nigeria despite advanced knowledge about the pathophysiology of the disease and guidelines available for treatment. This review examines some of several challenges in current asthma management in Nigeria.
Objective: To examine challenges in current asthma management in Nigeria.
Data Sources: This includes PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, AJOL, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Research gate and Scopus. Only observational studies retrievable in the English Language were included. All studies were assessed for methods and study designs.
Conclusion: There are a number of challenges to providing optimal management of asthma in Nigeria and these are centered on diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Current challenges in asthma management include illiteracy, poverty, unavailability of asthma medications, pollution, poor inhaler technique, lack of ICU care, stigmatization, language barrier, poor monitoring and poor asthma research. Strategies that will address these challenges should be the focus for stakeholders including physicians and policymakers at the National and state levels to improve the quality of asthma care in Nigeria for optimal control.
